The Cathedral is delighted to welcome Dr. YangSun (Sunny) Yu as Guest Organist on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at 1:00pm
Dr. YangSun (Sunny) Yu began her church music and organ studies with Dr. Donglim Min at Seoul Theological University in South Korea, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Church Music and Organ Performance. She then pursued a Master of Music in organ performance under Dr. H. Joseph Butler at Texas Christian University in the United States. Later, she earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in organ performance at the University of North Texas, studying with Dr. Jesse Eschbach. YangSun's organ studies were further enriched by performing in masterclasses with renowned organists Gerre Hancock (improvisation), Robert Clark, David Higgs, Daniel Roth, Stefan Engels, Jack Mitchener, and, most recently, with Zsigmond Szathmáry.
YangSun’s dissertation studies the work of Gervais-François Couperin (1759-1826), a rarely illuminated composer among the Couperin Dynasty, and provides a performance guide to enable organists and scholars to better understand and interpret Gervais-François Couperin’s organ works and to gain transferable knowledge applicable to concepts relevant to French post-classical literature. YangSun’s research was presented at academic conferences at the University of North Texas, University of Texas at San Antonio, 2023 Historical Keyboard Society of North America held in Claremont Graduate University in California, and in Seoul, South Korea in 2024.
YangSun is an active concert organist and collaborative artist. Her notable performances include two organ recitals during the American Guild of Organists convention in 2017. Her other performances have been presented in collaboration with church choirs, soloists, local communities, schools, and distinguished ensembles such as the UNT Symphony Orchestra and the Frisco Chorale. Currently, she serves as the Organist & Associate Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas and as adjunct professor at Central Seminary.
