All are invited to the 10am English Mass honoring St. Óscar Arnulfo Romero on the 44th anniversary of his death on Sunday, March 17, 2024.
The Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop José H. Gomez and concelebrated by guest Cardinal Emeritus of El Salvador Gregorio Rosa Chávez, who was a close friend and collaborator of the saint and is the first and only cardinal in the Central American country. The cardinal will be visiting Los Angeles in pilgrimage to several parishes of the Archdiocese of L.A.
Saint Oscar Romero was assassinated by a right-wing death squad while celebrating Mass on March 24, 1980, when he was the Archbishop of San Salvador. His outspoken advocacy of human rights, and his insistence that the Church be inseparable from the poor all made him target. It was a time of brewing violence in El Salvador and persecution against members of the Catholic Church who stood up for the poor and against injustice.
